In the event of denied boarding, flight cancellation or flight delay for at least 2 hours when traveling to/from Canada, in the event of lost or damaged baggage, certain standards of treatment and compensation may be received in accordance with Canada’s Air Passenger Protection Regulations.

Flight delays, cancellations, denied boarding and others
While Korean Air is committed to providing a comfortable journey, we recognize that unforeseen issues like delays or cancellations may occur. Please refer to the information below for further assistance.
- Overview
- Under the Air Passenger Protection Regulation (APPR) of the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA), Korean Air provides compensation and other benefits for delays on flights departing from or arriving in Canada that meet certain conditions.
- Applicable compensation
- A. Compensation
- ①1 Compensation Amount : Passengers are entitled to CAD 400 for delays of 3 to less than 6 hours, CAD 700 for delays of 6 to less than 9 hours, and CAD 1,000 for delays of 9 hours or more resulting from the delay.
- ②2 Compensation Eligibility (Must meet all the conditions below)
- The arrival delay at your final destination is three hours or more from your scheduled time of arrival
- Final assessment of delay is within Korean Air’s control and not related to safety
- This may include delays caused by additional time required for tasks such as loading of in-flight meals.
- Delays caused by reasons outside of Korean Air’s control, such as meteorological conditions, medical emergencies, or aircraft manufacturing defects are not eligible for compensation.
- Delays resulting from unforeseen aircraft maintenance issues that are within Korean Air's control but required for safety purposes are not eligible for compensation.
- Korean Air failed to notify the passenger of the delay 14 days prior to the scheduled departure time
- You are not eligible for compensation if Korean Air informed you of the disruption at least 14 days prior to your flight.
- You submitted a claim for compensation within one year of the flight's original scheduled date of operation
- You are not eligible for compensation if the claim is submitted more than one year after the flight's original scheduled date of operation
- B. Meals and Accommodation
- ①1 Provided Meals and Accommodation
- Reasonable quantities of food and drink
- Access to communication devices (If feasible)
- (If your alternative flight requires an overnight stay) Korean Air will provide you with a complimentary hotel stay or a comparable accommodation. This includes transportation between the accommodation and the airport. Reasonable quantities of food and drink
- The location and other details of the accommodation may vary, subject to availability (or booking status).
- ②2 Compensation Eligibility (Must meet all the conditions below)
- Delays within Korean Air’s control (including safety issues)
- Korean Air failed to notify the passenger of the delay 12 hours prior to the scheduled departure time
- You have waited at the airport for 2 hours or more after the departure time on your original ticket
- How to Rebook a Flight (Find alternative flight)
- If your flight is delayed for three hours or more, Korean Air will notify passengers for necessary rebooking arrangements. To ensure timely communication, it is essential that you provide accurate contact information when booking for your flight. Passengers at the airport could seek assistance from Korean Air representatives at the gate or customer service desk.

If your flight is delayed by three hours or more, and none of the rebooking options provided to you accommodate your needs, you may receive a refund for the unused portion of your ticket. If your travel no longer serves a purpose as a result of the delay, Korean Air will return you to your point of origin and provide a refund for the unused portion of your ticket.

- Provided Compensation
- A. Compensation
- ①1 Compensation amount: Passengers are entitled to CAD 900 for delays of 3 to less than 6 hours, CAD 1,800 for delays of 6 to less than 9 hours, and CAD 2,400 for delays of 9 hours or more resulting from denied boarding.
- ②2 Compensation Eligibility (Must meet all the conditions below)
- The reason of denied boarding should be within Korean Air’s control but not safety-related (for example: commercial overbooking)
- You are not entitled to compensation, if the reason is within Korean Air’s control but required for safety
(example: changes in plane size due to unforeseen maintenance)
- You are not entitled to compensation, if the reason is not within Korean Air’s control
(example : government/regulatory or security requirement, resulting in an overbooking)
- Must check-in and arrive at the gate for boarding on time
- You are not eligible for compensation when you do not check-in and arrive at the gate for boarding on time.
- You cannot apply for denied‑boarding compensation if you decline an alternate seat offered to you on the same flight at no extra cost.
For safety or operational reasons, an aircraft change may be necessary. In such cases, the number of Prestige Class seats may be reduced. If your seat is affected, we will reach out to offer re-accommodation in Economy Class (subject to availability) and provide a partial refund for the fare difference.

- The reason of denied boarding is within Korean Air’s control (including safety issues)
- Korean Air failed to notify you 12 hours prior to the scheduled departure time
- You have waited at the airport for 2 hours or longer after the departure time on your original ticket
- Boarding Priorities
- During a denied boarding situation, Korean Air will first solicit those who volunteer. However, if there are not enough volunteers, boarding priority will be given to unaccompanied minors; passengers with a disability and their support person; passengers traveling with a service animal; passengers traveling with family members; and passengers who were previously denied boarding on a prior flight.

- How to Rebook a Flight
- If you are denied boarding at the airport, our staff will assist you with rebooking. Korean Air’s denied-boarding and rebooking procedures comply with the provisions of the Air Passenger Protection Regulations.
If none of the rebooking options provided to you accommodate your needs, you may receive a refund for the unused portion of your ticket. If your travel no longer serves a purpose as a result of the denied boarding, Korean Air will return you to your point of origin and provide a refund for the unused segments of your ticket.
While Korean Air strives to manage your baggage with the utmost care, delays or damages may occur. If your baggage is delayed or damaged, please file a property irregularity report.
- Korean Air’s compensation guidelines
- Korean Air is liable when the damage occurs while the baggage is under the airline’s control during the transportation, and only if the damage results from the airline’s intent or negligence.
- Liability limit (maximum compensation)
- Where the WarSaw Convention applies: USD 20(250 French Gold Franc) per kilogram
- Where the Montreal Convention applies: 1,519 (SDR(Special Drawing Rights) per person
- For Korean Air-operated flight segments, an Excess Value Charge system is available, providing compensation of up to USD 5,000 upon payment of a specified fee
- Deadlines to file a report
- Damaged or Lost baggage: You must file a report within 7 days from receiving your baggage.
- Delayed Baggage: You need to file a report within 21 days of baggage delay.
- Delayed or Damaged baggage
- Korean Air strives to track and deliver bags swiftly in case of a delay.
For delayed, damaged, or lost baggage on a flight to or from Canada, Korean Air will refund the associated excess baggage fees upon request.
- Special baggage (Musical instruments)
- Due to a high risk of damage, we recommend carrying musical instruments on board or purchasing a separate seat to transport them.

Seating of children under the age of 14 years
- When booking directly with Korean Air Reservations, Korean Air will assign seats in proximity to each other for you and your accompanying child under the age of 14, free of charge.
- Booking Online : Please select 'Child' under 'Passenger Selection'.
- Booking directly with Korean Air Service Center/Centre : Please be sure to tell the booking agent that you are accompanying a child under the age of 14.
Under the Air Passenger Protection Regulations (APPR), you may request that children under the age of 14 be seated close to their accompanying adult at no extra charge when booking through travel agencies.

- The seating assignment process is not automated. If you are not satisfied with the seating arrangement for you and your child, please reach out to a Korean Air representative (Service Center or airport staff) at any time.

- If seating the two passengers in close proximity requires a change of cabin class for one or both individuals, Korean Air may offer an upgrade or a downgrade. You may be required to pay the fare difference for an upgrade, and you will receive a refund of the fare difference for a downgrade.
